Each year on International Day of the Midwife, we pause to recognise the vital role midwives play in the health and wellbeing of women, babies, and families. This year’s global theme is “One Million More Midwives” being celebrated on Tuesday, 5 May with a powerful call to invest not only in training new midwives, but also in retaining the skilled professionals already within our workforce.
At YNA, we know that many experienced midwives step away from clinical practice for a short time due to family commitments, health, or life circumstances and that returning can feel daunting. Confidence can dip, practice environments may have changed, and opportunities for supported re-entry are often limited. That’s why we’re proud to be working in partnership with Flinders University to help midwives stay connected to clinical practice and return with confidence.
Background
YNA and Flinders University previously collaborated on a pilot program designed to support registered midwives who had taken a short break from practice. The results spoke for themselves, with all five participants from the pilot program remain in clinical midwifery roles today. This outcome reinforced what we already knew, that with the right structure, education, and support, midwives can successfully and confidently re-engage in clinical care.
Building on this success, YNA has continued our partnership with Flinders University to further strengthen and expand the program. There will be a midwife appointed to lead the program delivery and undertake research to evaluate its impact. This research focus is critical to ensuring the program continues to evolve and delivers real, measurable workforce benefits.
RESET-M
The RESET-M (RE-engaging through Supportive Education and Training for Midwives) program is designed specifically for midwives who want to remain in, or return to, clinical practice after a short break. Rather than requalification, the focus is on rebuilding confidence, refreshing skills, and providing supported clinical exposure in a safe and welcoming environment.
The program includes:
- Five full days of education, combining lectures and simulation-based learning at Flinders University or a nominated hospital
- Two supernumerary shifts
- Eight midwifery shifts
- Ongoing support from a dedicated Midwifery Educator/Facilitator
Looking ahead
With renewed funding and shared commitment, YNA and Flinders University are planning to deliver two RESET-M programs in South Australia within the next year, expanding access for midwives seeking supported pathways back into practice.
As we reflect on International Day of the Midwife 5 May 2026, this partnership represents a practical response to the global call for “One Million More Midwives.”
By investing in the confidence, capability, and wellbeing of midwives, we’re helping to strengthen the sustainability of the profession — and the care provided to women and families across South Australia.
